PSORIASIS
Psoriasis is a non-contagious skin disorder that most commonly appears as inflamed red swollen skin lesions covered with a silvery white scale. It is a genetically predisposed auto immune skin disorder. Some say it is caused by a fungus infection in the body or a “leaky gut” (partially digested protein leaks past the gut’s entry and the liver’s neutralizing enzymes making its way into the immune system). Psoriasis may be the result of the body’s incorrect metabolization of fat because it is rarely found in countries where diets are low in dietary fat.
Whatever the underlying cause(s), psoriasis is characterized by the recurring growth of too many cells. Normal skin cells regenerate in about 28 days, in psoriasis sufferers this may happen in as little as 5 days. Natural sunlight (UV rays) can reduce or even clear up psoriasis, usually temporarily. This is why some are in remission during the summer months. Swimming in sea water with its dissolved mineral salts seems to help relieve symptoms as well.
Coal tar is the oldest remedy for psoriasis but topical and oral steroid medications are more widely used today. Oral medications include Methotrexate (most commonly used on severe psoriasis and is very toxic to the liver) Tegison, Accutane (used to treat acne), Soriatane, Cyclosporin A (helps to control the rapid growth of cells by suppressing the immune system). Dovonex (a Vitamin D compound) is a cream used to treat mild psoriasis. Anthralin is a topical medication that has been used for the last 100 years to treat this condition. It typically causes irritation to the surrounding skin. Lasers are coming into use as well.
Although the above treatment options may have unfavorable side effects, they are still considered more effective for most than so called natural remedies such as hemp seed oil, oregon grape root, and oil of oregano (derived only from the wild oregano plant grown in the mountains of Greece, touted to be a potent fungicide). We have observed that regular application of emu oil will reduce the lesions in about 20% of psoriasis sufferers. In others it helps relieve the itching and burning sensations and reduces the white scaly patches. Even though emu oil does not always reduce the lesions, most continue to use it to help control the other symptoms. It is sometimes recommended to improve the results of other medications buy using emu oil as a carrier.
Treatments for psoriasis vary as greatly as the results. Some treatments will be effective for awhile then effectiveness is reduced. A lengthy period of patient experimentation may be necessary to find an effective remedy but those who do find a solution always say it is worth the effort.
