Eczema is a condition characterized by an inflammatory response of the skin causing redness, itching, blisters, weeping, oozing, and crusting. It is a common allergic reaction in children but also effects adults. It is thought that food sensitivities and a lack of essential fatty acids contribute to the development of this condition. Many people supplement with flax seed (high in fatty acids). A tablespoon of ground flax seed on cereal every morning is sufficient.
Factors that can exacerbate the disease:
-Irritants - Environmental factors such as use of soaps, solvents, and other drying compounds such as constant hand washing or coming in contact with dirt, paper, or chemicals.
-Allergens - In the air and in food often trigger a flare-up. Management of atopic dermatitis can include dietary restriction of eggs, cow's milk, soy, wheat, nuts and fish.
-Infections - Bacterial, fungal or viral infections may cause a flare-up of eczema which begins to weep and ooze.
Topical corticosteroids (cortisone) are the drugs of choice for treating eczema. The risks associated with prolonged use of a potent corticosteroid may result in skin deterioration (skin becomes thinner) and adaptation (that means it stops having an effect on the skin). Other risks involve toxicity to the liver and heart problems.
Emu oil's deep penetrating action helps to rehydrate skin faster and more effectively than any other type of natural topical application. Emu oil aids in rapid cell regeneration, is anti-inflammatory, and is also hypo-allergenic which many essential oils are not.
Emu oil is extremely effective in relieving the symptoms of eczema, especially in children, and is safe to use on premature babies or even pregnant women's eczema.
